In many ways, Ihringen am Kaiserstuhl is a typical wine-growing village in the Kaiserstuhl region. Not far from Freiburg im Breisgau and situated on the sunniest side of the Kaiserstuhl, Ihringen is considered the warmest place in Germany. The Kaiserstuhl is a great place for biking or hiking through the vineyards.
More than 3,500 years of history
The history of Ihringen spans more than 3,500 years. The group of Celtic burial mounds in the southeastern part of the village is the largest in the Upper Rhine Valley. Roman remains bear witness to this long history, as do Merovingian graves from the 7th century. First mentioned in a document in 962, Ihringen, located in the Kaiserstuhl region, found its way—through various twists and turns—to Baden-Württemberg, to which it has belonged since 1952.
Ihringen is located between the Rhine and the Kaiserstuhl; thanks to its location, the village is characterized by winegrowing and agriculture. Ihringen is certainly a great vacation destination if you want to slow down. There’s no such thing as “just a quick stop.”
Since the Reformation, Ihringen has been predominantly Protestant, while the district of Wasenweiler remained Catholic. Thanks to this unique situation, one district has a Protestant church and the other a Catholic one. Until 1938, Ihringen had a Jewish community; in 1925, 3.7% of the population was Jewish. A visit to the Jewish cemetery is recommended.
The wine-growing town of Ihringen am Kaiserstuhl
The Kaiserstuhl region is home to a wide variety of wineries, ranging from small family-run operations to large cooperatives. In Ihringen itself, you’ll find the Ihringen Winegrowers’ Cooperative. The regional classics—Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Silvaner—are just as impressive as the Müller-Thurgau, Gewürztraminer, Muskateller, and Scheurebe.
The wines from Ihringen benefit not only from the many hours of sunshine and the sheltered location on the southern slope of the Kaiserstuhl—which creates an almost Mediterranean climate—but also from the soil, which is partly volcanic and partly loess. You can taste this combination with every sip of Ihringen wines, which regularly win major awards and hold their own on the world stage.
Freiburg Kultour GmbH is happy to arrange sightseeing tours through the Kaiserstuhl, covered wagon rides through the vineyards, and visits to farms and wineries. For more information, please feel free to contact us by email or phone.
