As we stroll through the Stadtgarten and up the Schlossberg, you’ll learn many interesting facts about the history and design of this part of the city, which is so beloved even by Freiburg locals. But we’ll also share a few surprising anecdotes along the way. What does a drake have to do with the 1944 air raid? Get a feel for the charm of the Stadtgarten and marvel at this gem in Freiburg’s Old Town.

Before you take the Schlossbergbahn up Freiburg’s local mountain, you’ll have the chance to watch the bustling activity in Freiburg’s most beautiful park while enjoying a cup of coffee and a sweet pastry. (Allow 3 hours for this version of the tour, which includes a coffee break.) Refreshed and ready to go, you’ll head to the Schlossbergbahn and take the modern gondolas up the mountain. At the top of the Schlossberg, you’ll enjoy the view over Freiburg, and if the weather permits, a panoramic vista stretching from the Kaiserstuhl to the Vosges Mountains in France, or into the Black Forest.

From the Schlossberg, where the castle of the Zähringer family—who founded Freiburg—once stood, you can let your gaze wander over the entire city. After a walk across Kanonenplatz, we finally descend to the Schwabentor, the point where the Old Town’s extensive network of Bächle channels begins. This is where the “Stadtgarten and Schlossberg” tour ends.
