Tour Details

Freiburg, boasting of 900 years of vivid history, is certainly a top city to visit in Germany. Located at the very foothills of the Black Forest, Freiburg offers a fascinating mixture of historical sights and vibrant modern life. Come with us on this classic walking tour through the historic city centre.

Discover the Black Forest capital during this Freiburg Tour

On this Freiburg City Tour we follow the course of the Bächle as the medieval little canals running through the old town are called and discover the small lanes and impressive building alike. Our experienced guides will enchant you with their stories and tales ranging from the founding fathers of the city, the dukes of Zähringen, to the challenges of a modern city striving to become a green and sustainable community.

Under the rule of the House of Habsburg, Freiburg became a powerful stronghold of Europe’s most important dynasty in the southwest of Germany and the Black Forest. The university founded in 1460 and the gothic cathedral with its majestic tower still bear witness to the heyday of Freiburg which was already back then a top city to visit in Germany. On this tour, we explore not only the outside of the cathedral, but we also visit the inside to take in the magnificent stained-glass windows and other features of this stunning church building.

From the town hall past the late medieval house to the whale and on to the lesser known corners of the old town like the picturesque tanner’s quarter, this walking tour covers the historic city centre of the Black Forest capital in depth. Come with us on a journey through 900 years of our captivating city at the foothills of the Black Forest.

What To Expect

Professional tour guides will tell you the history of Freiburg im Breisgau with charm and expertise. On your way through the old town, we will show you the sights of the city, above all the cathedral and our famous Freiburger Bächle:

  • Your classic city tour of Freiburg begins in front of the Tourist Information on Rathausplatz or at an agreed meeting point. Now we immerse ourselves in the lively hustle and bustle of the old town with its Rhine pebble mosaics, medieval buildings and the Münstermarkt, the largest and most beautiful open market in the region.
  • In front of buildings such as the Whale House and the Historical Department Store, you will not only learn interesting facts about the style and architecture, but also about famous visitors to the city such as Emperor Maximilian I and Erasmus of Rotterdam.
  • We pay special attention to the Freiburg Minster (from the outside). Famous master builders of the Middle Ages such as Erwin von Steinbach and Hans Niesenberger von Graz helped Freiburg im Breisgau to have one of the most impressive churches on the Upper Rhine, which is still the heart of the city.
  • In almost every alley in Freiburg's old town we encounter the Freiburger Bächle, which give the city its special flair. Learn about the happily flowing little streams and how important they once were in the city's water supply.
