Freiburg im Breisgau
Description

Even though Freiburg has a wealth of sights to offer, it’s certainly possible to see the most important ones in just one hour. For those in a hurry or visitors who don’t want to walk for more than an hour, the “Short and Sweet” Freiburg city tour is the perfect choice.

In a Nutshell—The Top Attractions in 60 Minutes

Experienced tour guides will give you a concise and knowledgeable overview of the interesting and entertaining details and stories of our city’s 900-year history—all in just one hour. Since the sights in our picturesque Old Town are often quite close together, you can explore a lot even in a short amount of time.

Just around Freiburg’s Münsterplatz alone, there are a multitude of fascinating buildings to discover, such as the department store or the Alte Wache. The cathedral tower watches over it all, and of course, Freiburg Cathedral plays a central role in this tour as well. There’s not only art-historical information to share about this Gothic masterpiece, but also plenty of entertaining anecdotes.

From Münsterplatz, it’s just a stone’s throw to the surrounding alleys, where we encounter the Bächle and their long history. After all, with the possible exception of the cathedral, there’s hardly any other Freiburg landmark that’s as closely associated with the character of our city as our Bächle, where the people of Freiburg love to cool their feet on hot days. You’ll also come across the unique Rhine pebble mosaics—for which Freiburg’s Old Town is famous—several times on this compact city tour. Behind many of these images in the pavement lie entertaining stories about Freiburg’s shops and their owners.

Even visitors who have only a short time to spend in Freiburg will gain a lasting impression of the beauty and charm of our Black Forest capital on this guided tour. Let us introduce you to Freiburg in a concise and engaging way!

What to Expect

Professional tour guides will charmingly share their expertise about Freiburg im Breisgau and their love for the city with you. As you make your way through the Old Town, we’ll show you the city’s most important sights, especially the cathedral and our famous Freiburg Bächle.

  • Short and sweet: on a brief city tour, you’ll see the must-see spots in the Old Town, such as Town Hall Square with its mosaics of Rhine pebbles and the KaJo, which has always been the bustling heart of the city.
  • At the Schwabentor or the Martinstor, learn just how well-fortified Freiburg once was, and how the streetcar—which the people of Freiburg have greatly valued since 1901 as a sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation—nearly spelled the end for the old city gates.
  • Special attention is given to Freiburg Cathedral (from the outside). Famous medieval architects such as Erwin von Steinbach and Hans Niesenberger of Graz helped Freiburg im Breisgau build one of the most impressive churches on the Upper Rhine, which remains the heart of the city to this day.
  • In almost every alleyway of Freiburg’s Old Town, you’ll come across the Freiburg “Bächle,” which give the city its unique charm. Learn about these cheerfully flowing little streams and how important they once were to the medieval city’s water supply.

Danke!
