A visit from book illustrator Horst Thiel
Freiburg Kultour GmbH is a tour operator based in Breisach am Rhein in Baden-Württemberg. It offers a wide range of guided tours. Among the tour participants was Horst Thiel , a former art teacher and book illustrator from Aschersleben, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. He was visiting the “Dreiländereck” (Tri-Border Region) with a group. On Easter Monday 2022, he surprised everyone by creating detailed drawings of what he saw.
A former art school graduate sketches his travel experiences in his travel journal while on the road. While on location, he draws only the outlines and then refines his work in the evening, relying on his artistic long-term memory. The travel journal is intended solely for his personal memories. He has now visited 43 countries around the world and has always created an artistic travel journal for each one. It would certainly be interesting to see the travel journal entry he mentioned from his Easter trip.
In addition to his visit to Colmar and Riquewihr in French Alsace, his journey continued to the Breisgau region of Baden. He visited Breisach am Rhein, Ihringen in the Kaiserstuhl, and Vogtsburg in the Kaiserstuhl. In particular, the impressive landscapes—such as the volcanic hill of the Münsterberg in Breisach, the Winklerberg, formed of volcanic rock, in Ihringen, and the Texas Pass through vineyard terraces with a breathtaking view of the Totenkopf—the highest peak of the Kaiserstuhl low mountain range in Vogtsburg—triggered in him a longing for memories that he captured in his own illustrations.
