The book *Breisach – A Brief History of the City* by Susanne Brall is a new release from Friedrich Pustet Publishing. Other titles in the same series include *A Brief History of the City* for Freiburg, Ulm & Neu-Ulm, Mannheim, and Heidelberg. The author, Susanne Brall, is the managing director of Freiburg Kultour GmbH.
On July 8, 1820, Friedrich Pustet, the son of a bookbinder, received permission from the authorities in Passau to open a bookstore. Six years later, he left Passau and established a business dealing in books of all kinds in Regensburg. There, he began publishing religious and folk writings, as well as regional, historical, and theological literature.
Over the course of the next few generations, this publishing house grew into a company known beyond the region, increasingly specializing in liturgy and church music. Its liturgical works became leading publications in the Catholic world and have shaped the publishing house’s profile to this day. Today, the family-owned Pustet company comprises not only the publishing house but also a large-scale printing operation and 11 bookstores in 8 Bavarian cities.
Susanne Brall, born in 1978, studied law and, while working as a tour guide, also studied history. She currently co-manages the companies “Freiburg Kultour” and “Rhein Kultour & Touristik” in Breisach. History has been Susanne’s great passion since childhood. She has found a second home in the historically rich Upper Rhine region, which continues to fascinate and inspire her. Whether it’s Celtic hilltop castles, Vauban fortifications, or topics related to everyday life—such as the water supply in medieval Breisach—there’s hardly a historical subject that doesn’t captivate Susanne. This love for the region and its history is reflected in *A Brief History of Breisach*.
The book traces Breisach’s eventful past. The strategic location of the Münsterberg on the Rhine has always attracted settlers and warriors, which has had a decisive influence on the town’s history. From a Celtic princely seat, Breisach developed into the most powerful military fortress on the Upper Rhine, though it was also nearly completely destroyed. Over the centuries, the town was fiercely contested and courted by the Staufers, the Zähringers, the Burgundians, the Habsburgs, and the Bourbons. Periods of peace were few and far between in this eventful history. Through an examination of notable events and figures, as well as entertaining anecdotes, the author brings to life the fascinating history of Breisach am Rhein—a city that was awarded the title “Europastadt” as early as 1964.”
