Of course, Freiburg Kultour also offers guided tours of the cathedral. After all, Freiburg Cathedral is the city’s landmark. And let’s be honest—you really can’t miss the cathedral. But the cathedral is much more than just the landmark of Freiburg im Breisgau; it is the city’s parish church and, since the early 19th century, the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Freiburg.
Construction of the cathedral took place from around 1200 until the mid-16th century. Freiburg Cathedral has a long and complex construction history. Modeled after Basel Cathedral, construction of Freiburg Cathedral began in the Late Romanesque style and continued from 1230/40 in the Gothic style, drawing inspiration from Strasbourg Cathedral. The artistic connections and mutual influences are evident in all three buildings in a variety of ways, both in the architecture and in the sculpture. Therefore, when visiting the Upper Rhine Valley, it makes sense not only to book one of our guided tours of the Freiburg Cathedral but also to take a look at our guided tour offerings in Strasbourg and Basel.
The tour guides we use for our Münster tours are, in most cases, art historians. With their expertise and charm, they’ll inspire you to fall in love with our Münster. We offer two different Münster tours, which vary in duration and focus. The meeting point for both tours is the Historisches Kaufhaus on Münsterplatz.
Please keep in mind that the cathedral is first and foremost an active place of worship. For this reason, we are unable to offer this tour on Sundays and holidays. The cathedral is also closed for guided tours on weekdays between 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. If you have any questions about which tour is right for your group, please contact us by email or by phone during our opening hours. We’d be happy to assist you.
Of course, you can combine your Münster tour with our other city tours.
